Imagine being given a ticket to a magical island with a group of friendly and creative people. A place where the only rule is you must create one short piece of music each week, and share it with the community.
An island free of stress or judgment, where creativity is the only currency, and everyone gives freely without fear. The joy is in the creative process, not the outcome.

And watching from the mainland is a family of supporters, waiting each week for a message in a bottle from the islanders, to discover new and unexpected gems, and to be inspired.

What is WAV Island?

WAV Island is an initiative of Tim Shiel, as an extension to his work at the label Spirit Level. What started as in idea within Tim's Discord server to give musicians a safe place to be creative, and a gentle little push to do so regularly, is now entering its third season.
WAV Island is a mystical place designed to help foster creativity, collaboration & community. During your stay on WAV Island, you are challenged to write one new musical idea each week, for eight weeks, and share it on Spirit Level’s Discord server. It can be a short exercise, and piece of a work in progress, or a complete track. As long as its about 30 secs long or more, its good.

But consistency is king here.... if you miss a week, you’re gently kicked off the island (though not kicked off the server, of course). If you make it to the end, you earn a place on the official WAV Island Bandcamp compilation album.

Why do this?

Creativity is a skill you can hone even if you only have one free hour each week. Establishing a healthy creative routine is a tried and tested way to both develop your craft and stay happy and fulfilled. Making something out of nothing is the fun part, right?

We know how lonely it can feel making music on your own, and we know how hard it can be to maintain motivation and discipline. With a healthy peer group around you, and a safe space to share your ideas without judgment, this challenge may inspire and reinvigorate your creative process.

We hope that this will strengthen some of the connections that we already see forming on Spirit Level’s Discord server - and that it might bring some new voices into our community as well.

Getting at ticket to WAV Island

The club is open to join now on Spirit Level’s Discord server. Once you’ve joined the server, head to the #🌴-return-to-wav-island channel and follow the instructions. 40 was a good number of participants for Season 1 and 2, so we will probably cap Season 3 at 40 participants as well.

What else do I need to know before joining?

Be kind and respectful of others in the club! Dickhead behaviour will see you booted not just from the club, but from our whole server.
Keep it positive and encouraging.
Remember that for many people, sharing works in progress is a very vulnerable thing! Some people might be sharing their music with other people for the very first time.
Remember that not everyone is looking for feedback - this experiment is about celebrating creativity not about critique.
If you do want to give some constructive thoughts, ask permission from the creator, and consider taking that conversation into DMs.
Don’t spam the chat! Make space for everyone to be part of the conversation.

What do I need to submit each week?

It can be anything musical - a beat, a song idea, a voice memo.
Minimum length of 30 seconds.
Only one idea each week please.
Every idea should be new - don’t submit old demos! That’s cheating.
Any music format is fine, but we recommend 320 MP3, FLAC or WAV.
